Snow much fun in first grade!
This week we enjoyed another 4-Winds lesson with three parent volunteers. We learned about animals in the winter. Some animals hibernate, some are active, and some are dormant. We enjoyed a puppet show, story, animal sort, and activity. Each student made a pine-cone bird feeder.
More math fun with partner games. We are practicing a new strategy. When you add 9 to a number, make the 9 a 10 and add the other number to it - then subtract one from the answer. (If you are adding 1,2,or 3, to 9 is just as efficient to count on.) When adding 10 to a single-digit number, put the number in the "backpack" replacing the zero in 10 with that number. Ask you child about these strategies.

On Friday we plan to celebrate the 100th Day of School. Please check-out the Sign-Up Genius link that Colleen emailed out last weeks. All of the items are necessary except for decorations. Each student should also bring a bag of 100 of something in a clear, zip-lock bag. The bag should be no larger then gallon-size. We will be weighing the items and comparing them with greater than, less than and equal symbols (<, >, =)
The February book order will go home on Monday. Please return it by the following Monday, Feb. 8th. I will also be sending home a book list for books that will be available for purchase during an upcoming Book Fair. Due to space, there will be no used books this year. If you plan to have your child purchase books at the Book Fair, please indicate which book they should purchase, or plan to attend the Book Fair with your child. Thank you.
Unfortunately, snowshoeing was cancelled for this week and next week due to a lack of snow. We will keep our fingers crossed that it will snow sometime in February so the class can enjoy this activity.
Report Cards were sent home on Friday. Please keep the report card and return the signed envelope to school by the end of the week. Thank you.
