Happy New Year! We are all settled in and moving right along. This week we continued to write poetry. Your child is learning about line breaks. They are deciding on the mood that they want their poems to have. We are choosing more precise words and making comparisons with similes and metaphors. We have also learned about repetition. This silly poem by Shel Silverstein is one of our favorites.
          
We are practicing measurement during math. Ask your child about the difference between an inch, foot and yard.

Today is our 80th day of school. We are completing our 8th Century Page.

We've had an exciting few weeks of learning about Matter. We have made mixtures and learned about solids and liquids. We are learning a lot about the Properties of materials.

The highlight of our week was being stranded on an island with only our bathing suits. We needed to plan and make hats that were comfortable and protected us from the hot sun and rain. We only had materials from lunch supplies (paper towel, foil, clothes pins, string, and paper bags) that washed up on the beach. What materials would be best?

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 
 

We are continuing to learn about how Double Vowels EA and EE are used in the beginning or middle of words and EY at the end of a word or syllable. They are MUCH more common than e consonant e (silent e words like Pete)

 

Our read aloud book is 

Book Orders are due Friday. We do not have school on Monday because of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Reports cards will be sent home the last week in January. Ms. Lubic and I have been assessing student's reading levels. We will also take a cumulative, mid-year district math exam this week. My daughters returned to college on Saturday. Back to an empty nest. Your wonderful children help fill the void.
