Reader's Workshop: We are continuing to grow our good reading habits. We learned that readers reread to see more and notice new details, sneak peak at the pictures to help with the words, and that readers drop bad habits! Throughout all we do, we understand that reading is thinking. We are always making sure we monitor ourselves by asking: Does it make sense? Does it sound right? Does it look right? If the answer to any of these questions is no, we STOP and go back to fix it!

A CCS motto since kindergarten is: When a writer is done, they have just begun!
Writers can...
  • Add to your writing or picture
  • Reread your writing and edit
  • Start a new piece
To do this, writers need to work independently and persevere. These 2 words are key to our growth this year as learners in all areas.  This past week we focused on:
We reread our work with a partner searching for where we need to add punctuation, remove “ands” from run on sentences and correct errors.
We also learned and practiced these important spelling rules:
Starting words with a c or k:
If a word ends with the sound /k/:
  • Use ck after a short vowel.
  • Use k after a long or r-controlled.
  • Use c after a short vowel in a 2 or more syllable word.
First Grade Writers
First Grade Writing: This week in writing, first graders focused on a new writing tool... their writing partners! We worked together to touch and tell a small moment story to our partners. Our partners then asked us questions about our story. After that, we would touch and tell our story again with more details before we went off to sketch then write. This oral rehearsal of a story is an important step in our writing process.

Word Study: First graders focused on tapping three sound words this week. They say the word, tap it out by bringing a finger down for each sound they hear, and then blend those sounds together to make the word. This tapping strategy helps us in reading and in writing.  Students also began leading our ‘quick drill’ of letter names - keywords - sounds!
