I hope you had a nice Valentine's Day. We had a fun afternoon exchanging cards, playing bingo, and enjoying cookies, popcorn and apple juice. Thank to our generous contributors.

On Friday we also created a chain of love by completing ACTS OF KINDNESS.

First Grade mathematicians celebrated the 100th Day of School on Tuesday. They have continued to practice learning 2 and 3D shapes by playing two games. The games are Memory and I Have Who Has. We are also learning fractions including halves, quarters, and thirds.

 During our 2nd Step Social Skills lessons this week we learned how to calm down when we feel strong emotions. 

Second graders started learning about opinion writing.  An important aspect of this unit is
honoring our differences.  To begin we are writing about what pet we think is best-dog or cat. 
We watched a cat vs dog video, read a few books and filled out a couple of planners to help us
get ready to write our opinions.  We are using this prompt to learn how to write strong beginnings
and back up our opinions with reasons. 

First Grade Word Study & Writer's Workshop: First graders continue to work with the snap words: say, says, each, see, between as well as closed syllables with and without suffix -s. This week's writing core idea was: Writers use tools to make sure they use all they know about writing. Our instructional focus was the application of language conventions in authentic writing. Students learned to use a checklist to edit their own work. We also reviewed ways to bring your stories to life, ways to teach your readers, and ways to spell unknown words. First graders are really enjoying having choice in their writing in this unit.
